I hope everyone had a most festive, and family-filled Christmas! Boy, oh boy, I love Christmas. This year was especially wonderful because it was my lovely boyfriend’s first time celebrating. It just made the holiday that much more special with him here. I even made him his own stocking. Never having made a sock (knitted or crocheted) I was super out of my element. I also didn’t have an actual pattern either..I had one as a guideline, but all the stitches, numbers, and the gauge were totally different and well, though it did not turn out “perfect” the stocking is wonderfully nonperfect in my eyes.

Image

ImageThere it is in the middle..not the most attractive of stockings, but I love it and my boyfriend loved it too!!! And that’s what matters most. Harumph. The instep gave me the most trouble. It also got me very interested in sock making. I’ve been wanting to learn how to knit socks, but everytime I do delve into research I get incredibly intimidated by all the technicalities and terms. Also there are just so many different ways!! Toe up, after thought heel, cuff down, this and that!!! I was also quite impressed with myself that I was able to crank it out in less than 2 hours.

Onward. I made everyone a handmade gift this year. Whether it be crochet or knitted or what have you. Everyone got a knitted beanie, except my mom and grandmother. They got stocknitte scarves, which turned out amazingly. Honestly, I can’t believe I pulled off a handmade Christmas. There were some intense moments of panic for a while there. Nevertheless, I pulled it out. GO ME!

Thank goodness my parents agreed not to put the ornaments on the tree until I got home. I love decorating the tree πŸ™‚ We are real tree folks allll the way, for those of you who were wondering. No plastic trees here!

ImageMy mom made this ornament probably around the time my sister was born (around 33 years ago!!!). There’s no telling how many Christmas memories this ornament has seen.

ImageI even attempted to wrap all my presents in a cutesy manner. I’m absolutely dreadful at wrapping presents. I just do not seem to possess the patience for it. But I held strong and tried not to just rip all the paper up as I was going along. Grrrr…I envy those of you out there who can wrap!!!

ImageOn a random note, I’ve been trying my hand at cross stitch lately. It’s an easy concept on paper, but the execution is just a bit harder. Here’s some of my mother’s needlepoint/cross stitch pillows in our house. The butterfly is my favorite πŸ™‚

Good Saturday everyone and Happy Yom Kippur to all those Jewish folks out there! You know what I’ve noticed lately? The air is a bit more crisp, the leaves a bit more orange, the mood a bit more excitable..why? BECAUSE IT’S FALLLLLLL! I love Autumn. It is by far my most beloved season. I just want to wear sweaters and scarves and mitts, go to high school football games, and drink apple cider until the sun comes up.

Here in the city I feel as though we get quite cheated out of Fall. At home in NC we get a good solid two months. Everyday is perfect weather. Sunny with a brisk wind. Warm during the day and snuggle weather at night. Here we get maybe two weeks. It’s fallish for a couple days then hot as hell, then fallish another day, then the next week it’s arctic tundra. Once it’s winter here, it’s winter for good.

To celebrate my favorite time of the year I wanted to do some decorating. I always get incredibly jealous of people who get to decorate their porches with pumpkins, marigolds, and hay bales. Here..I have…a door…in a hallway..I don’t even have a balcony! So I perused the holiday aisles in Michaels searching for something festive to put on our door. I’d also just like to mention that since February we’ve had a Valentines Day wreath on our door. It was time for a change, and what better than during the season of transformation!!! Back to Michaels.. most of the holiday decor was a bit..gaudy. I didn’t want to make our door look like Thanksgiving threw up and aimed straight at our apartment. I also didn’t want to spend more than $10.

So I bought a little grapevine wreath for $4.99. I knew I had lots of ribbon and yarn at home so I took advantage of that. I also wanted to make this wreath holiday/season interchangeable. So here’s the finished product.

πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ SOOOOO HAPPY!

Image

I used red orange and brown yarn, red and orange ribbon, and twine. I just tied them on in a simple knot and I made a cute bow out of the twine. It’s simple and easy, cheap and can be easily changed for any season or holiday.

Here’s what it looks like hung up. I had to take the picture inside my kitchen because we have an extremely ugly door and it’s very bad lighting…not that this is much better πŸ˜›

I love all the cute details of this wreath. The vine curly q’s, the different textures of the ribbons, yarns, and twine. It’s just soooo cute πŸ™‚

What I’m Listening to: 22, Taylor Swift. This song always gets me in a fantastic dancy mood πŸ™‚ Tra la laaaaaa.

Hope everyone had a most wonderful weekend. I know I did πŸ™‚ I found some radical pieces o’ furniture on the street, had some amazing eats, and did quite a bit of organizing and crochet !

Image

Oh and did I mention my wonderful guy had these beauties waiting for me when I got back from London?! What a guy. πŸ™‚

On Friday night Daniel and I decided to go out to eat–something we don’t do very often because well..we have no money. Whenever we go out to eat we never have a place in mind. We just like to walk around a neighborhood until we find something that tickles our fancy. I love these walks because not only do we get to spend some quality time together, but neither of us is stressed out or in a hurry to be somewhere or ON THE PHONE. I’m in Alphabet City here in NY so we decided to walk around in my hood. We finally settled on a cute Italian place we had passed a few times before called Spina. Oh. my. goodness. This place was AMAZING. Some of the best food I’ve had in like..the past YEAR.

Daniel got mini gnocchi with a sweet ragu sauce, which was delicious, but my dish definitely was the winner of the night. It was ear shaped pasta (all their pasta is homemade by the way!!!) with lamb and truffle butter sauce with sweet peas. It was one of the best dishes I think I’ve ever had. I just had to tell people about it. SO GOOD.

And then the next night we went to Olive Garden. HA! Don’t ask why we went there of all places. It was exactly as it always is..mediocre.

Friday night as we were walking to Alphabet City we also came across some wonderful furniture on the street just waiting to be taken home and loved. I got a lovely solid wood side table, and a cabinet/tv stand type thing. Daniel took home a tall skinny bookshelf and a desk. How’s that for one night?!

Image

Here’s the side table. I la la la looooove this thing.Β

Image

I’m using it to store frames and pictures that I have, but just haven’t gotten around to hanging yet.

As soon as I saw the bigger cabinetty/tv standish type piece I knew exactly what I wanted to use it for. Yarn storage! I had lots of baskets and bins and even an antique suitcase full of yarn! Even with all of that I still could not contain all my yarn. First I needed to organize all zee yarn. So I pulled everything out and decided to organize by color to make it more appealing to the eye.

Image

And then I realized I had so much yarn I could start my own shop. And I also came to the conclusion that I am not allowed to buy anymore BLUE yarn!!!! I had so much it was ridiculous.

Andddd…after squishing in all the yarn and sneezing a billion times from all the stirred up dust….HERE IT IS!!!

Image

I love walking into my room and seeing the bright display of yarny color! It makes me so happy!!

And now I have a cute place to store my hooks and needles and buttons and such πŸ™‚

This morning I’ve been hooking up some dishcloths/potholders/washcloths. Christmas is coming fast and I want to get a head start on gifts!!! They are just super simple, plain dishcloths. If I’m going to eventually throw something away I’m not going to make it too fancy. I love cotton but I am remembering why I don’t work with it too often. It is so hard on my hands. My poor fingers are in need of a massage! And please note my cute butterfly and polka dot tea cup!!

Hope you all had a great weekend!
